Budget? What do you wanna shot? If you get a DSLR, are you the type that likes more accessories and lens?
You can also go through the photography thread, its been ask a bunch in there.
You can see photos also in there. I shoot a D90 and naptime shoots a D40.

Re: digital slr anyone?
canon's new rebel T1i has a lot of good reviews. Almost the same exact sensor as the canon 50d, much lighter and it shoots hd video!!! Price is affordable just like any other rebel.

Re: digital slr anyone?
Well any DSLR will be able to handle a "fast action photo". A lens will be able to determine how you really capture that. As for night shots, any camera can handle that, but the D90/D300 does a better job at noise in high ISOs. So it performs better at night in that regard.
Video is a nice feature if you need it, but understand that D90 isn't like a normal consumer camera. There is no auto focus while filming, so you will have to adjust it yourself. You can autofocus BEFORE you start film though.

Re: digital slr anyone?
i guess a big thing that matters too is how much you want to spend. i used to have a d50 which was fine, i didn't pay much for it, but then with things like d90s that take video in HD it all comes down to whateveryoulike.

Re: digital slr anyone?
I would not buy the D40x new. The D60 is its replacement and a better replacement.
D40 is affordable cheap, and a great camera. The D60 is affordable, cheap, a great camera, and a few more features then the D40. It has more megapixels, adaptive dynamic range, and a better metering matrix. Probably like 2-3 more little features. Honestly, nothing you would see between choosing the two.
D40x vs D40 only has more megapixels.
If your budget fits the D60, I would recommend saving alittle longer and getting the D90. Its not a newbie camera, but easy to use and is much better then the D40/60. OR buy a D40 and get another lens (HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE 35mm 1.
or a flash.
If you buy used, try to find a low shutter count. Meaning how many times someones clicked the shutter. I wouldn't personally buy one over 10,000 photos, but something under 20,000 is ok. Don't pay more then $350 for a used D40 with kit lens.
